Cortelyou Heritage Society

Photo of a stained glass window. The Rev. John R. Cortelyou, C.M., served DePaul University for more than 60 years. He began teaching in DePaul’s Department of Biological Sciences in 1949 and became department chair in 1952. In 1964 the university chose Fr. Cortelyou as its eighth president. A dedicated teacher and researcher, Fr. Courtelyou had some reservations about accepting the post. As president, he led DePaul with grace and uncommon vision during a period of significant growth and societal unrest.

During his tenure, Fr. Cortelyou established new schools, considerably advanced DePaul’s academic standing, and oversaw the construction of numerous buildings. It was his philosophy of the dignity of the human person, however, that defined him. His innate skills as a teacher and listener won him the deep admiration of all who knew him.

Like Fr. Cortelyou, those who include DePaul in their estate plans leave a lasting legacy on the university and its students. Humbled by such generosity, we are proud to welcome those who have made an estate or deferred gift to DePaul University into the society the bears Fr. Cortelyou’s name and honors his contribution.

John R. Cortelyou Heritage Society (CHS) membership is open to all those who include DePaul in their estate plans. CHS members make gifts through wills, trusts, retirement plans, giving techniques that provide income during their lives, life insurance, and other creative giving methods. This generosity helps ensure that the university will thrive in its mission to students for generations to come.

The benefits of joining the Cortelyou Heritage Society include:

  • New member welcome packet
  • Invitations to the CHS annual luncheon
  • Special communications throughout the year
  • Invitations to special university events, including the President’s Holiday Reception and Reunion Weekend
